Deeply troubling allegations have emerged about César Chávez. As a school community that carries his name, we know this news hits differently for us — and whatever you are feeling right now is completely valid.
The heart of this school has never lived in a name.
It lives in the teachers who show up every day, the families who pour love into this community, and the children who walk these halls full of potential. That cannot be shaken by the actions of any individual, no matter how prominent.
What we know
Allegations of abuse and grooming against César Chávez were reported by the New York Times in March 2026. Prince George’s County Public Schools is considering whether to rename the school. The PTO is not the body that makes that decision — the district is.
Where the PTO stands
We take these allegations seriously, and we are not indifferent to what it means for our children to spend their days in a place now shadowed by them. That conversation among families has begun, and we are not rushing it.
We have not taken a formal position for or against renaming. That is not one person’s call to make on behalf of every family here. What we will say plainly is that the cost of renaming is not a reason to keep the name — it is a reason to move deliberately, at a moment when this community is also defending its immersion program.
Our focus right now is supporting families and staff, and following the guidance of school leadership and PGCPS as an official response takes shape.
How the district decides
Renaming a PGCPS school follows a set process. It is worth knowing, because it is where a family’s voice actually counts:
- A committee is formed of students, staff, parents and community members.
- A naming commission reviews three suggested names.
- The superintendent makes a recommendation to the school board.
- The board makes the final decision.
If you want to be part of that, the committee stage is the one to watch for. We will post here when the district opens it, and in the WhatsApp channel.
If your child asks
Your children may come to you with questions. We encourage you to follow their lead and answer in whatever way feels right for your family. There is no script, and you do not owe anyone a particular answer.
You are not alone in this
As fellow parents and members of this community, we have heard your concerns and your pain. We know this has been hard. But the parents, staff and students of this school remain as committed to our values, our mission and each other as ever.
